Terminology

Before we go into detail about our bandwith options, there is some terminology that should be explained.

Internet to OVH - This is your servers download bandwith; packets come from the Internet to OVH

OVH to Internet - This is your servers upload bandwith; packets are sent out from OVH to the Internet

OVH to OVH - This is your servers upload bandwith that is sent to other OVH servers; packets get sent and received with the OVH network

The terms above deal specifically with your server, but there are two more commonly used terms that deal with the OVH network.

Peering Bandwith - When your server sends out packets (data) outside of the OVH network (OVH to Internet) the destination of these packets differs. Peering bandwith is made up of packets sent out to these internet exchanges:

  • Austria
    • SwissIX
    • TIX
    • VIX
  • Belgium
    • BNIX
  • Czech Republic

Any packets sent outside of this region fall under the category of Transit Bandwith.

Bandwith

Most of our servers use what we call the Traffic Series option, meaning you get a monthly bandwith limit and your connection is guaranteed anywhere in the world (peering and transit). This means that the connection speed listed on our website, whether its 100Mbps or 1Gbps, is guaranteed no matter what.

With our PR servers you can choose to use either the Traffic Series option, or you can get the Unmetered option. Now the only difference between these two options is that the Unmetered series does not guarantee your connection speed when packets are sent over Transit Bandwith. Packets sent over Peering connections will utilize your connection, while packets sent over Transit connections get put on low priority.

Low priority means that OVH checks which server the packet is sent from and whether that server uses the Traffic Series option or the Unmetered option. If the server uses the Traffic Series; the packets get sent without deprioritizing; however if the server uses the Unmetered option the packets are sent only after those from the Traffic Series.
